The pursuit of producing a unique music that represents contemporary Bengali culture gave birth to the first-of-its-kind Bangla band "Cactus" in 1993. Bangla Rock found a new dimension as Cactus produced music that combined innovative mixing of beats and guitar sounds with profound lyrics in a language that was close to the heart of Bengal .
With Deep Purple, Pink Floyd, Led Zeppelin, and Iron Maiden as chief inspirations, Cactus has been the flag bearer of good Bangla rock for over 15 years. Cactus shot to fame with their debut album released by HMV in 1999. The tracks like 'Halud Pakhi', 'Mon', 'Tumi Elena' were chartbusters. Cactus is the first Bangla Band to have composed music for a film - "Nil Nirjone" in 2003. Their album "Rajar Raja" has received critical acclaim for combining strong social message with melodious music. Recently, a Hindi version of the popular track 'mon' was featured by Anuraag Basu in the TV serial "Love Story" on SAB TV. Cactus has performed in a number of prestigious concerts, award shows and TV programs such as "Allaince Francaise", "Fete de la Musique" World Music Day 2001 concert, Kargil Concert, "Freedom 50" Concert, "Millennium Vishwa Banga Sammelan", ETV "Anandadhara Sharadotsav", Doordarshan New Year's program, ATN world launch program, Bengali Film Journalist's Association Awards, Anandalok - Ujala Awards etc.
Cactus was the first Bangla Band ever to tour the United States. They were voted the "Best Musical Act of the Year" and won the Chancellor Anadalok Award for music in 2001. Cactus participated with India's leading singers, actors and celebrities in the video "Tsunami" of the album "We Believe in Now" released by the Indian Prime Minister Dr. Manmohan Singh. |
